ππΌ Welcome to SwiftlyRush
What's the current future of conferences?
It's certainly something I have been thinking about, not just recently but since I launched SwiftLeeds 3 years ago. The year after I launched the industry and the world economy actually went through a huge shock because it had been locked down during the periods of COVID and everyone was funding sponsorships, tickets etc..
However, as the economy has shrunk and budgets are being cut I have often wondered what conferences will do as they hugely rely on both sponsorships and tickets being purchased. We saw the awful news of 360iDev closing last year and just recently SwiftTO also announced a closure.
The reason?
Well, it takes huge efforts to put a conference together but also the costs are significant as well. Juggling keeping ticket prices low so that people can opt to fund this themselves if their employer cannot but also trying to pull enough sponsors together to cover the remainder. Of course, if sponsors don't come forward then ticket prices have to go up and therefore not enough people will come, it's quite a fiscious circle.
What I have noticed is that companies are tighning budgets and this is huge for conferences that rely on those heavily. Luckily, SwiftLeeds has managed to keep this going but as a non-profit company we also make sure we cover out costs and have some for the following year, we'd like to make SwiftLeeds self sustainable in all aspects.
So what's the message? Well, if you love conferences then please try your best encouraging your colleagues, your managers or even your bosses and spread the word in terms of sponsorships available, tickets for your team or similar.
Conferences are the heart of technology communities and it's important we keep them alive, even despite the rocky moments within the economy.
With this in mind, we have only a handful of tickets from our 350 allocation at SwiftLeeds so we thank you dearly for supporting us and if you've not bought your ticket yet, now is the time!
Have a great week ahead
